Dr. Andrew Huff, a former epidemiologist who worked at the EcoHealth Alliance, has claimed that the COVID-19 virus was man-made and a result of the US government's funding of dangerous genetic engineering of coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.

These claims have been made by Huff in his new book, The Truth About Wuhan.

Huff alleges that China's gain-of-function experiments, which seek to increase the ability of viruses to infect humans, were carried out with inadequate biosecurity and funding from the US.

The experiments were banned in the US in 2014, but were later reintroduced.

Huff claims that the EcoHealth Alliance taught the Wuhan lab the "best existing methods" to engineer bat coronaviruses to attack other species.

Huff worked at the EcoHealth Alliance from 2014-2016 and served as vice-president 2015 onwards. He he has claimed that he sounded the alarm over biosafety issues and quit the organisation in 2016 over ethical concerns.

The EcoHealth Alliance had been working with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) on a program called PREDICT, which aimed to detect and identify zoonotic viruses with pandemic potential, including coronaviruses.

Previous reporting by journalists such as Nicholas Wade had revealed that the US government had funded gain-of-function research at the WIV, and the institute's chief had admitted to The New York Times that their research focused on enabling the virus to jump from one species to another.

Although Huff labels the entire episode as one of the greatest cover-ups in history and the "biggest US intelligence failure since 9/11", he stops short of claiming that China intentionally released the virus.
