The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) is slated to conduct a hearing on November 3 to deliberate upon the West Bengal government's proposal to incorporate 87 castes into the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.

In an official communication addressed to the West Bengal government, the NCBC has formally requested a comprehensive dossier, spanning several categories.

The data requisition includes a caste-wise breakdown of candidates selected from the 87 OBC castes, details of Class III, Class IV, and Safai Karmacharis by caste, specifics on scholarships disbursed to students hailing from the 87 OBC castes in state-run educational institutions for the past three years and the current year, as well as a caste-wise register of the beneficiaries.

It is noteworthy that the NCBC had previously put forth a recommendation calling for an increase in OBC reservation in the state, from the current 17 percent to 22 percent.

Regrettably, as of now, no discernible progress has been made towards implementing the commission's recommendation.
