The Chennai Press Club in a statement condemned the threats given by functionaries of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK) IT Wing against journalists covering the floods and waterlogging caused by Cyclone Michaung in the city.
The statement called upon Chief Minister MK Stalin to take action against those issuing threats to journalists and stated that this was against the ideal of freedom of speech, which former chief minister M Karunanidhi championed. It added that this was against the values propagated by former chief minister and DMK founder, CN Annadurai.
According to a report by The Commune, in a X (formerly Twitter) spaces discussion, DMK Organising Secretary RS Bharathi's son Sai Lakshmikanth, speaking about Shabbir Ahmed of The News Minute and Omjasvin MD of the Times of India said, “He is comparing that and this flood. With what do we beat this guy (Shabbir)? Just thrash him. Just like that Omjasvin (another journalist with Times of India) we’ve to thrash him. He thinks he is some revolutionary leader. Paradesi Naai (Wastrel dog). He shouldn’t be left to live in peace. Poromboke payale (wasteland).”
