Congress MLA JMH Aassan Maulsana from Velachery, which is one of the worst affected areas in Chennai due to flooding and waterlogging caused by cyclone Michaung, faced criticism for his remarks while visiting his constituency.
Many areas of the constituency continue to face stagnant water and lack of power supply in spite of the rains ending a few days ago.
Speaking to Aadhan Tamil, he said, "When heavy rains occur, these kind of incidents will happen. This is ordinary during nature's fury. We have to accept it.
"When the height of Velachery lake was increased, excess water will naturally flow into other areas. We have to accept it."
The journalist then asks him if there are any lessons that could be learnt from this occurrence and remedial measures be taken.
To this Maulaana said, "No no. Nothing can be done. This is the maximum that can be done. If water is going to the sea but the sea is not receiving it, what can we do? This is the maximum. We cannot do anything more than this."
Velachery is also the constituency in which two people, R Jayaseelan and Naresh are trapped in a 60 foot trench, submerged under water for more than 3 days. The rescue operation is underway.
