The Supreme Court today (14 August) directed the Tamil Nadu Police not to take any coercive action against YouTuber and political commentator Savukku Shankar.

Shankar, who was arrested over his controversial remarks about policewomen, had approached the court after the police once again detained him under the Goondas Act, days after his earlier detention was set aside by the Madras High Court.

The latest detention order was in connection with a case registered against him by the Theni police for the alleged possession of ganja.

Lawyers representing Shankar asked the bench to quash the 17 FIRs (first information reports) against him.

The case would be heard again on 23 August.
