Apple is reportedly in the process of developing a highly affordable MacBook, aiming to cater to the education sector and compete with Google's Chromebook.

This new MacBook model is expected to be priced significantly lower than Apple's existing offerings.

According to a report from DigiTimes, Apple is planning to introduce a new product line for its existing low-cost MacBook Air and Pro models.

While the external appearance of the laptop may still feature a metal casing, it is likely to be constructed from different materials.

The report suggests that the use of lower-cost mechanical components will enable Apple to offer the new MacBook at a more budget-friendly price point.

This move is seen as a direct challenge to Chromebooks, which have gained popularity in the education sector.

However, it's important to note that the launch of this new MacBook may not happen until the second half of 2024.

This delay could be due to the lack of activity from major Apple suppliers like Quanta Computer and Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn) at this time.

Chromebooks have seen a surge in adoption within the education sector, with shipments reaching 33.5 million units in 2021 compared to 13.9 million units in 2019, as per the DigiTimes report.

Nonetheless, competing with Chromebooks presents a formidable challenge for Apple, given that typical MacBook prices start at around $999, while Chromebooks are available in the $200 price range.

Furthermore, the 9to5Mac report highlights that Google services and the Chromebooks infrastructure have established a strong foothold in the education sector, making it difficult for competing operating systems like Mac or Windows to penetrate the market.

In other news, Apple is gearing up to unveil its iPhone 15 lineup at the company's annual September event.

This year, Apple is expected to introduce four new iPhones: the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Additionally, the Apple Watch Series 9 is anticipated to be launched, although there is no mention of an Apple Watch Ultra or Apple Watch SE for this year.
