China is developing a new futuristic battle tank that will be able to defend against modern threats like anti-tank missiles and suicide drones.
Recently, images of the new tank leaked, suggesting that it will be a two-seater tank geared more towards fighting the next generation of warfare instead of the traditional tank-on-tank warfare seen in earlier times.
The tank, it is reported, is being developed based on experience from the Russia-Ukraine war.
Suicide drones have wreaked havoc on Russian tank formations, forcing the Russians to operate strange-looking 'turtle tanks' as vanguards on the Ukrainian frontlines. Turtle tanks are just T-72 tanks surrounded by shed-like metal covers on all four sides, except for an opening in the front to allow drivers to see, to defend against Ukrainian suicide drone attacks.
The Chinese are however taking a different approach.
The new tank is expected to be equipped with X-band radars, an electronic warfare system, an active protection system (APS), and an anti-aircraft gun.
The X-band radars will be able to detect incoming suicide drones. The active electronic warfare system will jam the drone. If this does not work, then the anti-aircraft gun can shoot the drone down.
The APS, on the other hand, can shoot down anti-tank missiles.
For offensive tasks, the tank is expected to be equipped with a 105mm smoothbore gun and have networked technologies for data sharing and increased situational awareness. It is also expected to have the capability to launch coordinated strikes by controlling unmanned drones and ground vehicles beyond visual range.
