In a significant move to establish Andhra Pradesh as a multi-modal logistics hub, the State Government on 16 November granted administrative approval for a pre-feasibility study for six proposed greenfield airports.
The airports are planned at Kuppam, Srikakulam, Nagarjuna Sagar, Tuni-Annavaram, Ongole, and Tadepalligudem, according to G.O. Rt.No.84 issued by N. Yuvaraj, Secretary (FAC), Infrastructure & Investments.
The initiative follows deliberations between Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu in August 2024.
Subsequently, the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited (APADCL) identified suitable land parcels and initiated the groundwork for the study in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Significant land parcels have been earmarked for the development of proposed airports across Andhra Pradesh. The Nagarjuna Sagar Airport will span 1,671 acres in the Gurazala division of Palnadu district, while the Kuppam Airport has been allocated 1,502 acres.
For the Srikakulam Airport, 1,384 acres have been designated in the Palasa division of Srikakulam district. The Tadepalligudem Airport in West Godavari district will cover 1,123 acres, and the Tuni-Annavaram Airport in the Peddapuram division of Kakinada district has been allotted 788 acres. Additionally, the Ongole Airport in Prakasam district will occupy 658 acres.
To facilitate the pre-feasibility study, the government has allocated Rs 1.92 crore. The study will be conducted by a multi-disciplinary team from the AAI, with support from the APADCL, reports The New Indian Express.
In addition to airport development, the centre is preparing to unveil a new seaplane policy, which Naidu believes could significantly boost tourism in Andhra Pradesh.
He also revealed plans to introduce water aerodromes in Prakasam and Srisailam, a proposal that has received full backing from the Chief Minister.
The centre and state are now aligned in their vision to strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s aviation infrastructure, focusing on accelerating regional connectivity and boosting tourism.
